Scuba Diving

Red Tinged Corals At Kadamat

Major Attractions:
The main attraction in Kadamat is definitely the Lacadives Diving School set up by the famous Prahlad Kakkar. It is the first and only CMAS certified or World Underwater Federation diving school in India. Although its headquarters is in Mumbai, the main base is in Kadamat. Lacadives offer several packages for diving holidays here. There are beginner as well as advanced courses offered here during the season which starts in October and stretches till may. No courses are offered during the monsoon season. All the beginners are required to carry with them a doctor's certificate stating that they are fit for diving.
Apart from the warm and clear waters, Scuba Diving is worth it for the awesome spread of coral reefs on the sea bed. The most appealing of them all is the Red Tinged Coral that might just tempt you to pick them. However it is advised that you don't do it as it is against the law to take corals from these islands.
Access:
Kadmat can be reached from Agatti by taking a cruise. It can also be reached by taking up Lakshadweep Tourism departments Marine Wealth and Scuba Diving packages.

Bangaram Island

The Teardrop Shaped Island

The Jewel of the Lakshadweep, Bangaram Island is an uninhabited haven. Here, the only residents are the resort staff. Bangaram presents a breathtaking spectacle of sparkling coral reefs, turquoise blue lagoons, silvery beaches and lush green coconut palms. All preserved in the state little different from the days of Charam Perumal's reign.
The world's 10 best secret beaches (Sunday Times Travel Magazine Feb 8th 2004) that is just an hours’ flight from Kerala’s cultural capital of Cochin. This teardrop shaped piece of land is encircled by creamy sand. For a perfect outing, there are three uninhabited islands in the same atoll, Tinnakara, Parali-I and Parali-II. The deep, warm, clear waters of Indian Ocean with its myriad flora and fauna are an irresistible invitation to the scuba diving fraternity of the world.
The exquisite coral formation including the black coral formations, the variety and number of coral fishes - the angel, the clown, the butterfly, the surgeon, not to mention awesome -looking but harmless sharks, mantarays, sting rays, moray eels and turtles make diving at Bangaram an addictive experience.
The virgin reefs of Bangaram have been ranked by experienced divers as being among the best anywhere. Bangaram island offers a whole new set of activities. More unhurried can simply laze on the silver beaches, soak in the sun, listen to the sound of the waves and watch the swaying of the palms. The island feels like it was designed specifically for languid strolls, to watch the beach dances of hermit crabs and listen to the raucous music of the seabirds.
A wonderful underwater world waits to be explored. The lagoon surrounding the resort offers a great opportunity to explore and indulge. Beautiful creations like Parrot, Porcupine and Puffer fishes swimming gracefully with Moray eels and other colourful creatures present a breathtaking underwater scenario.
Access:
There are daily flights to Agatti Island from Kochi. You can carry only up to 10 kg luggage. From Agatti it is one and half hours boat journey to Bangaram. If you are comfortable with sailing then you can go via boat from Kochi to Kadmat Island.

Attractions On Agatti Beach

Golden Jubilee Museum:
Agatti is home to the only museum in entire Lakshadweep. Named Golden Jubilee Museum, it showcases models of traditional Minicoy sailboats (jagdhoni). It is also the best place to know the history of Lakshadweep by glimpsing on the display of olden day jars, pots, wooden chests and invaluable collection of gold coins. On the ground floor of the two floored building, there are two busts of Lord Buddha that are assumed to be from between 9th and 12th AD. These artifacts tells us a lot about the periods before Islam came to Lakshadweep Islands. The museum is open from 10AM till 5PM.
Mohiyudeen Mosque:
Mohiyudeen Mosque is the oldest mosque in Lakshadweep that dates back to 16th century. The mosque stands surrounded by grove of palms and magnificently and intricately carved tombstones some of which are as old as the mosque and few were built afterwards. The moment you enter the mosque, a pure and calming peace grips you leaving you feeling sober than ever. Mohiyudeen Mosque is built in the style resembling Malabar Temple. The unique thing about the mosque is that there are no minarets. There is also a huge well and a tank inside the premises of the tank.

Marine Life And Activities On Lakshadweep

The marine life of a coral sea is very elaborate and colourful. Tuna, shark, sailfish, seer, flying fish, turtles, etc., are found in the Lakshadweep sea area. Out of total fish catch, 80 per cent is of tuna. Turtles are of two types, green turtles and hawksbills. The importance of molluscan forms cannot be overlooked since they are magnificent in appearance and important from the economic point of view for the islanders. The money cowrie is abundant in the shallow waters of the lagoons and on the reefs. Cowries are picked up from the reef area at low tide, mainly by the womenfolk during their spare time, and are largely sold on the mainland.
Laksdhadweep is already on the tourism map of India. A visit to the island is an enriching and rewarding experience.Sailing in glass-bottomed boats one can have an enchanting view of the coral below. The wealth of coral formation attracts a variety of tropical fish-angel, clown, butterfly, surgeon, sweetlip, snappers and groupers. There are also manta and stingrays, harmless sharks and green and hawkbill turtles.
Water sports facilities like swimming, rafting, snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing, water skiing, catamaran sailing, deep sea fishing and scuba diving are available in the islands.
The rich and colorful coral life has not yet been affected by tourism infusion, but the administration has to sail very cautiously in this fragile marine environment.
